On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mr. Kriangkrai Thiennukul, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), participated as a speaker at the 16th OIE Forum “Industrial Reform: Transforming Thai Industry for the New Economy” at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
The event featured a special address by Mr. Ekkarat Phrompan, Minister of Industry, who spoke on the topic “Transforming Thai Industry for the New Economy.” The Ministry of Industry aims to develop the industry to push GDP growth to increase by no less than 1% under sustainable development. The ministry has measures to support the production of clean energy through the generation of electricity from solar power by installing solar panels on the rooftops of homes, buildings, or industrial facilities, known as Solar Rooftop, to reduce production costs and implement measures to assist household costs to remain at a low level to attract investors.
Furthermore, during the discussion, Mr. Kriangkrai addressed the challenges facing the global economy for the industrial sector today and the technological transformations. He highlighted challenges arising from the impacts of climate change as well as the effects of Trump 2.0 policies, stating that Thailand is one of the countries with a trade deficit with the U.S., necessitating vigilance regarding the occurrence of a trade war. Currently, the manufacturing index has significantly declined, particularly in the automotive industry, which remains in crisis due to the emergence of electric vehicles (EV), a major issue leading to the shutdown of the automotive industry.
Regarding adaptation strategies, Mr. Kriangkrai mentioned that the industrial sector needs to elevate Thai industry from traditional industries (First Industries) to future industries (Next-gen Industries) by promoting economic driving towards sustainable development. Moreover, outdated regulations and the excessive number of rules also hinder the country's development; however, there has been some progress in eliminating unnecessary regulations, such as the removal of the requirement for the installation of Solar Rooftop to lower industrial sector costs.
