สภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 13 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2510 โดยเริ่มแรกก่อตั้งในนาม “สมาคมอุตสาหกรรมไทย” (The Association of Thai Industries – ATI)มีคณะผู้เริ่มก่อตั้งจำนวน 27 คน และมีนายทวี บุณยเกตุ เป็นนายกสมาคมฯ คนแรก โดยกำหนดตราประจำสมาคมฯ เป็นตัวอักษร “ส.อ.ท.” อยู่ในเฟือง 3 วง
The Federation of Thai Industries was founded on 13 November 1967, originally established under the name “The Association of Thai Industries (ATI)” by a founding group of 27 members, with Mr. Thawee Bunyaket serving as its first President. Its emblem featured the letters “ATI” set within three interlocking gears.
สมาคมอุตสาหกรรมไทยได้แสดงบทบาทและสร้างผลงานจนเป็นที่ยอมรับจากหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ทั้งภาครัฐและภาคเอกชน โดยได้เป็นตัวแทนภาคเอกชนด้านอุตสาหกรรมในคณะกรรมการร่วมภาครัฐบาลและเอกชนเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาทางเศรษฐกิจ (กรอ.) ซึ่งมีนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นประธาน
The Association of Thai Industries carried out its role and delivered achievements that earned recognition from various public and private agencies, serving as the private-sector industrial representative on the Joint Public-Private Consultative Committee for Solving Economic Problems (JPPCC), chaired by the Prime Minister.
ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 28 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2530 รัฐบาลได้ประกาศพระราชบัญญัติสภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2530 ในราชกิจจานุเบกษา ยกฐานะสมาคมอุตสาหกรรมไทยขึ้นเป็น “สภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย” ภายใต้การกำกับของรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงอุตสาหกรรม
Subsequently, on 28 December 1987, the government promulgated the Federation of Thai Industries Act B.E. 2530 (1987) in the Government Gazette, elevating the Association of Thai Industries to the “Federation of Thai Industries” under the supervision of the Minister of Industry.

ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 13 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2510 ในนาม “สมาคมอุตสาหกรรมไทย” โดยคณะผู้เริ่มก่อตั้ง 27 คน มีนายทวี บุณยเกตุ เป็นนายกสมาคมฯ คนแรก ตราประจำสมาคมฯ เป็นตัวอักษร “ส.อ.ท.” อยู่ในเฟือง 3 วง

วันที่ 28 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2530 รัฐบาลประกาศพระราชบัญญัติสภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2530 ในราชกิจจานุเบกษา ยกฐานะสมาคมฯ ขึ้นเป็น ส.อ.ท. ภายใต้การกำกับของรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงอุตสาหกรรม
On 28 December 1987, the government promulgated the Federation of Thai Industries Act B.E. 2530 (1987) in the Government Gazette, elevating the association to the Federation of Thai Industries under the supervision of the Minister of Industry.

Membership Types
สภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย ประกอบด้วยสมาชิก 2 ประเภท คือ
The Federation of Thai Industries comprises two categories of members:
- สมาชิกสามัญOrdinary Members ผู้ประกอบการอุตสาหกรรมที่เป็นนิติบุคคล และประกอบการอุตสาหกรรมตามกฎหมายว่าด้วยโรงงาน ซึ่งรวมทั้งสมาคมการค้าเพื่อส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรมIndustrial operators that are juristic persons conducting industrial business under the factory law, including trade associations established to promote industry.
- สมาชิกสมทบAssociate Members บุคคลธรรมดาหรือนิติบุคคลใด ๆ ที่มิใช่โรงงานอุตสาหกรรมหรือสมาคมการค้าAny natural person or juristic person that is neither an industrial factory nor a trade association.
ทั้งนี้ สมาชิกยังถูกจัดแบ่งออกเป็นกลุ่มอุตสาหกรรม และสภาอุตสาหกรรมจังหวัดที่กระจายครอบคลุมทุกภูมิภาค บริหารงานโดยคณะกรรมการสภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย ซึ่งอยู่ในตำแหน่งคราวละ 2 ปี มาจากการเลือกตั้งจำนวน 2 ใน 3 ของกรรมการทั้งหมด และอีก 1 ใน 3 เลือกตั้งจากกลุ่มอุตสาหกรรมและสภาอุตสาหกรรมจังหวัด
Members are further organized into industry clubs and provincial industry chapters distributed across every region. The organization is administered by the Board of Directors of the Federation of Thai Industries, who serve two-year terms; two-thirds are elected from among all directors and the remaining one-third are elected from the industry clubs and provincial industry chapters.

ผู้ประกอบการอุตสาหกรรมที่เป็นนิติบุคคล และประกอบการอุตสาหกรรมตามกฎหมายว่าด้วยโรงงาน ซึ่งรวมทั้งสมาคมการค้าเพื่อส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรม
Industrial operators that are juristic persons conducting industrial business under the factory law, including trade associations established to promote industry.
