On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Mr. Hessadin Suwatanapongchet, Deputy Secretary-General of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), and Committee Member and Secretary of the Promotion and Support Department of Provincial Industrial Councils, participated in the event "Meeting with Entrepreneurs to Purchase Fruits to Assist Farmers" where Ms. Phaethongthan Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, visited the promotional fruit activities and met with fruit purchasing entrepreneurs, as well as viewing exhibitions titled "Thai Farmers Produce Quality Fruits to Standards" and "THAI FRUITS FESTIVAL 2025 BY DIT." Also present were Mr. Narumol Pinyo Sinnawat, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Ittthi Sirilathayakorn, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Naphinthorn Sri Sandphang, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Deputy Minister of Commerce, as well as executives and representatives from government agencies and the private sector at the central hall of the Command Building 1, Government House.
Ms. Phaethongthan revealed measures to assist fruit farmers during the peak production season, directing the Ministry of Commerce to integrate cooperation with government and private sector agencies to expedite the domestic distribution of fruits and promote systematic exports. She stated that, "The government is aware of the issue of market oversupply, particularly of mangoes, mangosteen, rambutan, and durian, and has assigned the Ministry of Commerce to collaborate with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Ministry of Justice, and the private sector, to accelerate the plan to purchase fruits from farmers in production areas and expand domestic sales through four main strategies: purchasing for consumer sales, buying for CSR activities, purchasing for corporate consumption, and purchases by government agencies such as the Department of Corrections for food preparation."
Additionally, there are collaborations with the private sector's nine groups, comprising 27 entities, to purchase a total of 103,760 tons of fruit. The Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Thai Fruit Traders and Exporters Association, and major private companies such as Sahapattana Inter Holding Co., Ltd. and Thai Beverage Public Company Limited are set to purchase over 55,500 tons of fruit, while major retail and wholesale stores will buy more than 34,450 tons. Oil stations, convenience stores, Thailand Post, government agencies, and various foundations will account for an additional total of 13,810 tons.
The government expresses gratitude to private sector partners for their role in aiding fruit farmers this year. Ms. Phaethongthan continued, "Moreover, the government is initiating activities to stimulate domestic fruit consumption, increasing sales channels for farmers, and raising fruit prices appropriately throughout the season. This includes promoting fruit consumption through social media by well-known KOLs to expand the consumer base, as well as organizing promotional activities such as fresh fruit recipe competitions and the Thai Fruits Festival, which is expected to help absorb over 346,500 tons of fruit domestically out of a total target of 730,000 tons."
For international markets, the government is strategically targeting three main groups: the potential markets of seven countries, including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and the United Kingdom; the image-promoting markets of two regions, namely the Middle East and South Asia, to create awareness of Thai fruit brands; and the markets with logistical advantages in four CLMV countries, namely Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam, which can facilitate exports through low-cost logistics systems.
Furthermore, the government will promote Thai fruit sales abroad through participation in international trade fairs and trade promotions to increase trade opportunities and expand the reach of Thai fruit markets.
