On September 11, 2026, Mr. Supakij Wattanaboon, Chairman of the Thai-Latin American Business Council under the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), participated in the seminar “Expanding Trade Opportunities in South America from the Thailand-Peru FTA” aimed at fostering understanding regarding the utilization of the Thailand-Peru FTA, providing information on trade policies and business opportunities in Peru, organized by the Department of International Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce at The Landmark Hotel, Bangkok.
The event discussed the framework of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and Peru, which was formalized in 2011 through a protocol aimed at accelerating trade liberalization and trade facilitation. Over 70 percent of products traded under the Thailand-Peru FTA are subject to a zero percent tariff, including automobiles and parts, electrical and electronic appliances, machinery and equipment, plastics and plastic products, textiles, and synthetic fibers, among others.
In 2026, Peru announced additional tax exemptions for 1,760 items, including beef, fish, chicken, mangoes, papayas, pineapples, and passenger cars, covering over 116.45 million USD in Thai import value.
Additionally, information was presented regarding trade, services, and investment opportunities covering potential products such as automobiles, electrical appliances, processed foods, automotive parts, and pharmaceuticals.
Meanwhile, Thailand can import essential raw materials from Peru such as fish meal, copper ore, and zinc ore to support the industry and reduce production costs.
Mr. Supakij stated that preparations before entering the Peruvian market should focus on three key aspects: 1. Language and local partners 2. Logistics pathways and transportation costs, and 3. Selection of high-value products or “Bulk Cargo” transportation, as well as considering investments in the region to enhance competitiveness.
Peru is recognized as an important market in the South American region, with a population of approximately 34 million people and is one of the countries with significant potential for regional growth.
The Thailand-Peru FTA serves as a crucial mechanism for reducing trade barriers and provides Thai entrepreneurs with easier access to the market, positioning Peru as a potential trading hub and distribution base for nearby markets. Consequently, Thai entrepreneurs can utilize Peru as a starting point for business expansion, forming partnerships, and venturing into the Latin American market.
It is anticipated that the complete framework of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and Peru will be signed by the end of 2026.
