The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is promoting the concept of “Branded by Thailand”, aiming to create mechanisms that transform cultural capital, wisdom, raw materials, and Thai identity into Brand Value. The FTI proposes that support for entrepreneurs should connect the entire process, from product development and brand creation to systematic access to global markets.
On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Mr. Wiboon Hongsrijnanda, Vice President of the Small and Medium Enterprises Institute of the Manufacturing Industry (SMI) at the FTI, and Mr. Yuthana Anothaisinthavee, Director and Secretary of the Creative Industry Development Institute at the FTI, participated in a brainstorming meeting on the topic “Branded by Thailand: Mechanisms for Creating Added Value from Thai Identity to Elevate Thai SMEs’ Products and Services in the Global Market” at Gallery Room 3, 5th Floor, S31 Sukhumvit Hotel, Bangkok.
[Transforming “Thai Identity” into Brand Value that the Market is Willing to Pay]
The FTI believes that Thai SMEs do not lack “quality products”, but the key challenge is how to leverage strengths in quality, raw materials, wisdom, and local stories to develop unique products that consumers are willing to pay for, rather than competing solely on price.
Therefore, the Branded by Thailand concept should evolve from merely supporting entrepreneurs to “have a brand” towards creating brands that can generate value and lead to competitive advantages through design, product development, storytelling, standards, quality, and intellectual property protection.
[Creating a Development Pathway Connecting SMEs from “Quality Products” to the Global Market]
The FTI proposes developing a Development Pathway that continuously links support throughout various phases of business, from product quality and production processes → identity and design → standards → intellectual property → brand creation → funding → market testing → distribution channels and expansion into international markets.
The key point is that support must not be a One Size Fits All approach, but should assess the readiness level and potential of SMEs beforehand in order to define development paths tailored to each business, from start-up entrepreneurs to those with market expansion potential.
[Proposing Readiness Assessment and Fast Track to Provide Competitive Advantages for High-Potential SMEs]
The meeting proposed a Readiness Assessment system to screen and categorize entrepreneurs based on their readiness levels concerning products, brands, standards, business capabilities, and market expansion potential, ensuring that support can address challenges effectively and utilize resources efficiently.
For high-potential SMEs ready to expand their business, a Fast Track should be available to expedite access to assistance and create a Time Advantage, enabling them to seize market opportunities in line with the Product Life Cycle. Support should encompass standards, quality, intellectual property, funding, and market access to help Thai products enter the global market more swiftly.
[Establishing a “Branded by Thailand Ecosystem” Connecting All Support Mechanisms for SMEs]
Another crucial mechanism is the creation of a Branded by Thailand Ecosystem, designed to link government agencies, the private sector, financial institutions, standard and intellectual property agencies, educational institutions, and market networks to work in unison and reduce redundant support efforts.
The FTI believes that a One Stop Service system and an entrepreneurial referral system should be developed to enable SMEs to easily access suitable agencies and tools, along with the provision of coaches or mentors to accompany business development. This would open opportunities for trial runs and practical application of knowledge through workshops or pilot markets before wider market expansion.
Ultimately, the goal of Branded by Thailand is not merely to increase the number of Thai SMEs “having a brand”, but to build Thai brands that can generate value, grow, and compete effectively in the global market by transforming Thai identity from cultural capital into tangible business assets and competitive strength for Thai entrepreneurs.
