Revised production targets for 2024 have been adjusted from 1,900,000 units to 1,700,000 units.
Mr. Surapong Phaisithpanpong, Advisor to the Chairman of the Automotive Industry Group and Spokesman for the Automotive Industry Group of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), disclosed the estimated production figures for 2024 (new)
The production target for 2024 has been revised from 1,900,000 units to 1,700,000 units, a decrease of 200,000 units, with the domestic production target lowered from 750,000 units to 550,000 units.
Negative factors for adjusted domestic production targets:
• Household debt has reached 90% of the country's GDP while household income remains low due to sluggish economic growth.
• Foreign investment as well as the industrial production index have been declining for several months, resulting in decreased worker income and heightened household caution in spending.
• Several economic agencies have downgraded the growth forecast for Thailand.
• Financial institutions are tightening credit approvals for automotive loans, particularly for pickups.
• The working-age population is smaller than that of neighboring countries due to low birth rates, which may cause investors to hesitate as the society ages.
Positive factors for adjusting domestic production targets:
• The government is effectively stimulating the economy and expediting spending and investment from the 2024 budget.
• The budget for fiscal year 2025 will be disbursed starting October 1, 2024, allowing the government to spend and invest more in line with policy objectives.
• Continued growth in international tourism and exports will help boost industrial production and improve workers' income.
• No expansion or escalation of international conflicts, which would impact the scarcity of chips and components.
• The U.S. Federal Reserve may cut interest rates this year, which could enable the Bank of Thailand to lower rates as well, easing the debt burden and increasing purchasing power.
• Expectations of increased foreign investment from efforts to attract major investors since last year, which could lead to higher household income and economic growth, thereby reducing household debt.
• The start of electric vehicle production to offset a 1:1 ratio of electric vehicles imported for sale in 2022-2023
Negative factors for export production forecasts remaining unchanged:
• The trade war and the Russia-Ukraine conflict as well as the Israel-Hamas war may escalate.
• Increased U.S. semiconductor control could cause semiconductor shortages.
• If China's economy grows at a slow rate, this will impact economies in Asia, which is the second-largest export market after Australia.
Positive factors for export production forecasts remaining unchanged:
• Sales of cars in partner countries are still growing.
• The U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to lower interest rates.
• The still-growing Chinese economy positively affects Asian countries, accounting for 28% of the vehicles Thailand exports.
