Transportation of goods is merely one of the activities within logistics to distribute or transfer products to the final destination, which is the customer. This includes transportation methods by road, rail, water, and air. Additionally, the logistics industry comprises various other activities, such as providing distribution center services, managing and storing goods, warehouse management services, and customs services for the import and export of goods. Logistics operators must manage costs to keep them as low as possible, which poses a significant challenge to their competitive capabilities in delivering services to customers.
:
The current business models with an apparent logistics support system are B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Customer). If the logistic development goals of Thailand according to the National Logistics Development Plan for 2023-2027 aim to establish the Thai logistics system as a driving mechanism for Thailand to become a trade gateway in the sub-region and region, as well as to enhance the value of the country's supply chain and connect trade transactions in e-Commerce, which is showing significant growth, then it is necessary to develop the logistics system into a fully integrated and efficient e-Logistics (electronic logistics) system.
:
As digital technology plays an increasingly significant role in enhancing efficiency and elevating the transportation and logistics business, instilling confidence in customers and service users, there have been changes in management processes that begin from production processes, transportation processes, storage processes, to customer service processes. The operational processes are as follows:
Improvement of transportation processes such as
The use of robotics technology to convert processed commands into commands that can effectively control various parts of the vehicle.
The integration of navigation technology as part of analyzing environmental conditions from mapping data, processing, and decision-making for driving routes, etc.
Improvement of warehouse and distribution center processes
Currently, the advancements in technology have narrowed the supply chain; thus, the competition in the logistics industry hinges on the speed and quality of product delivery to meet competitive demands. Warehouses are being equipped with new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), to drive internal systems for more efficient operations while reducing human errors and labor costs. Therefore, future trends in warehouse and distribution center development should align with the demands of logistics service users by utilizing technologies such as the following:
Augmented Intelligence simulates human intelligence and enhances human cognitive capabilities in software, such as memory and prioritizing predictions, problem-solving, decision-making, and boosting the ability to connect various data. Augmented Intelligence systems are data-driven, self-learning, and self-assuring to enhance human knowledge incorporation into software and improve in-depth understanding of humans, allowing users to express new requirements for further development.
Real-time Supply Chain Visibility is a technology that logistics companies must adopt in operations, promoting rapid responses to changes. This technology is utilized for traffic assessments, road conditions, weather conditions, and port conditions to optimize decision-making on route selection.
Warehouse Management System (WMS) is software designed for large warehouses with significant quantities of goods that cannot be entirely managed by humans. The main function is to record warehouse data, such as quantities, locations, sizes, weights, automate label generation, and document what types of products need to be moved, along with the process of moving them. A number of programs can receive user inputs to calculate how many staff are needed to move a shipment in one batch, what tools to use, and the estimated time required.
Improvement of export and import customs procedures
Innovations and technologies in services associated with export and import customs procedures are primarily technologies that the Customs Department connects with governmental agencies, licensing/certifying bodies for operators such as importers, exporters, cargo representatives, shipping companies, airlines, and banks. The data exchange protocols for customs declarations have evolved from paper-based forms to electronic data interchange (EDI). Moreover, the Customs Department also provides a data linkage service between governmental and business sectors (National Single Window) to prepare for international data connection among ASEAN member states (ASEAN Single Window), facilitating a reform of processes and enhancing safe service provision.
:
The significant change brought about by technology and innovation in various logistics activities has created substantial waves and new currents, serving as a key factor in the logistics and supply chain industry. It is also the sector that benefits most from technological advancements. Even amid fluctuating economic conditions, technology utilization continues to allow the logistics industry to push forward. Thus, operators should be vigilant and ready to adopt technology, as well as learn the operations of digital technology systems to enhance services in other areas beyond logistics, such as marketing, in order to effectively address comprehensive business development needs.
