In recent years, many individuals have likely heard the term 'ESG', especially within the industrial and investment sectors, which have become crucial criteria for investment considerations aimed at sustainable business operations and reducing the impact on the global environment, as opposed to merely seeking profit. This begins with three key factors: 1. Environmental: Consideration is given to the efficient use of resources, minimizing pollution during business operations. 2. Social: There is a focus on fostering good relationships among employees, clients, the community, and all stakeholders. 3. Governance: Efficient, transparent, and accountable management practices are prioritized, taking stakeholders into consideration. Currently, the ESG concept has evolved into an investment approach that both domestic and international investors are increasingly interested in for long-term investments. It can be referred to as a 'new investment system for green businesses.' Moreover, concerns regarding environmental issues and climate change, which are urgent global agendas, along with the clarity from the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) regarding the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, have emphasized the goal of keeping the global surface temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius and acknowledging the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030 and 60% by 2035. This represents a significant impetus for the industrial and investment sectors to adjust their operational contexts, and importantly, it serves as evidence for businesses on how to maintain sustainability effectively.
In Thailand, more industrial businesses have begun investing in ESG. According to The Sustainability Yearbook 2023 by S&P Global, an assessment of global organizational sustainability (Corporate Sustainability Assessment: CSA) was conducted, evaluating over 7,800 global companies across various industry categories. Companies are scored in tiers such as Top 1%, Top 5%, and Top 10%. For a company to reach the Top 1%, it must achieve a score of at least 85 out of 100. It is particularly noteworthy that Thailand has 12 companies that have been evaluated at the Top 1% level this time: 1. PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited 2. Thai Union Group Public Company Limited 3. True Corporation Public Company Limited 4. Home Product Center Public Company Limited 5. Siam Cement Group Public Company Limited 6. Thai Beverage Public Company Limited 7. VG International Public Company Limited 8. Thai Oil Public Company Limited 9. Berli Jucker Public Company Limited 10. BTS Group Holdings Public Company Limited 11. Asset World Corporation Public Company Limited 12. SCG Packaging Public Company Limited. Additionally, there are other Thai companies that scored in the Top 5% and 10%. More information can be found at https://www.spglobal.com/esg/csa/yearbook/2023/ranking/#. Although the ESG concept is a trend worth noting, leading many businesses to adopt it for investment benefits and to enhance their credibility over competitors, ultimately, the ESG principle remains critical for organizations to prioritize for future sustainability and should not be merely seen as a 'fad or trend.'
