On Friday, 6 September 2024, Mr. Kiangkhrai Thiennukul the President of the Federation of Thai Industries (F.T.I), together with Mr. Nava Janthanasurakhan Vice President of F.T.I and Head of Corporate Communication, Mr. Apichit Pasornrat and Mr. Wiwatan Hemmantarap Vice President of F.T.I and Mr. Apipob Phungchanchaikul Deputy Secretary-General of F.T.I congratulated the Mitihun news agency on its 8th anniversary “Mitihun enters its 8th year”, with Ms. Patcharanan Singhara Executive Editor and Mr. Ronakrit Sarinwong the Executive of Mitihun welcoming them at the Swissotel Hotel in Bangkok Ratchada.
During the event, Mr. Kiangkhrai was honored as the chairman of the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech, highlighting that currently, amid the economic challenges facing the world including technology disruptions trade wars, geopolitical conflicts and climate change, these factors have impacted both the Thai economy and the global economy.
Although the Thai economy is facing pressures and volatility due to these factors, there are still opportunities for driving the country forward in the future, especially in the tourism sector. In the first 8 months of 2024, Thailand welcomed a total of 23,096,752 international tourists, a growth of 32% compared to the same period last year, generating approximately 1.08 trillion baht in spending. At the same time, the expanding export sector has also positively impacted the economy, with Thailand's export statistics for July 2024 standing at 25,720.6 million USD, reflecting a growth of 15.2% compared to the same month last year, marking the highest growth in 28 months, driven primarily by electronics exports, which grew by 29.71% in the first 7 months, correlating with a 12.62% increase in stock prices in the electronics sector, indicating that exports are a key factor influencing stock prices.
Furthermore, the investment sector continues to grow positively, with investment promotion applications in the first 6 months of 2024 totaling 1,412 projects worth 476,276 million baht, an increase of 35% compared to the same period last year. This has led to significant investment projects in targeted industries such as semiconductors, electronic circuits, electric vehicles, renewable energy, agriculture, and food processing, reflecting confidence from both foreign and Thai investors and creating opportunities for Thailand to be a major investment destination in the ASEAN region. These factors are fundamental drivers for revenue generation from investments and developing new industries in the future.
As for FTI itself, it has been pushing Thai industries through the ONE FTI policy by upgrading and restructuring the industry into 2 groups: Group 1 includes traditional industries known as First Industries, which must enhance their competitive capabilities to continue operating, while Group 2 focuses on creating new industries or Next-Gen Industries such as electric vehicles, smart electronics, future foods, biotechnology, biochemistry, and even AI, machinery, or automation systems to drive sustainable economic development towards green industries, adopting clean technologies and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, which is Thailand's goal.
Simultaneously, efforts must be made to promote SMEs to develop into Smart SMEs to compete at an international level through the 4GO concept, which consists of: 1) GO Digital & AI - utilizing digital technology to reduce costs and increase production efficiency, 2) GO Innovation - promoting access to innovation and research for SMEs through the Innovation Fund and various projects of FTI to develop new innovative products, 3) GO Global - encouraging SMEs to produce and export goods to international standards, creating and expanding opportunities in foreign markets, and 4) GO Green - preparing SMEs to align their operations with sustainable organizational development or ESG principles and promoting eco-friendly products and services. The 4GO policy will serve as a flagship initiative of FTI to strengthen the industry and propel Thailand forward sustainably and robustly.
