The decline in industrial sentiment in September 2023 is attributed to a slowdown in the manufacturing sector due to weakened domestic purchasing power stemming from household debt issues and declining agricultural income. At the same time, demand from trading partners has diminished in line with the global economic conditions, particularly the slowdown in the Chinese economy due to the ongoing real estate crisis, which continues to exert pressure on the regional economy. Additionally, the depreciation of the Thai Baht, attributed to capital outflows motivated by concerns over interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve (FED), has resulted in rising import raw material costs. Furthermore, the Bank of Thailand's (BOT) policy interest rate hikes have led to increased financial costs for operators. Moreover, flooding in several areas poses obstacles to goods transportation and impacts agricultural raw materials.
Nonetheless, this month there are supportive factors stemming from measures to alleviate the cost of living, including a reduction in diesel prices to no more than 30 Baht/liter and a decrease in electricity rates from 4.45 to 3.99 Baht/unit, which has led to reduced production costs in the industrial sector and transportation costs, as reflected in the operational cost index that has shown an increase from the previous month. Additionally, the ongoing recovery of the tourism sector is positively impacting domestic consumption.
