Monitor the MPC meeting on October 28. Kasikorn Bank expects to maintain interest rates and indicates that the Thai economy may show signs of slowing in Q4. On October 20, Ms. Lalita Thienprasiddhi, Executive Researcher at the Kasikorn Research Center, revealed that the Kasikorn Research Center predicts that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on October 28, 2026, will decide to maintain the policy interest rate at 1.00% due to manageable inflation levels, even though there is a tendency to rise in line with energy and food prices. Inflation is expected to accelerate in the fourth quarter...
of 2026 supported by rising oil and food prices. However, the pass-through of costs to overall product and service prices remains limited due to weakened purchasing power. Ms. Lalita stated that general inflation is expected to accelerate in the fourth quarter of 2026 from 2.82% in September 2026 and may temporarily exceed the Bank of Thailand's target range of 1-3%, influenced by rising domestic oil prices in line with global markets and potential increases in food prices due to erratic weather conditions.
However, the pass-through of producers' costs to product and service prices is expected to be limited and gradual due to vulnerable household purchasing power. Ms. Lalita stated that the Thai economy is expected to slow down in the fourth quarter of 2026, reflecting uneven growth. Investment and exports related to technology and AI trends remain significant supporting factors, while private consumption and overall exports are projected to slow down after previously accelerating.
In addition, household purchasing power is under pressure from high energy prices and the impact of flooding. The reduced scale of economic stimulus measures may limit support for consumption, leading the MPC to likely maintain the policy interest rate at 1.00% in the December 2026 meeting as well. The direction of interest rates in 2027 carries increased uncertainty. Ms. Lalita stated that in 2027, the monetary policy direction of the MPC remains uncertain.
This depends on global energy price trends, the Thai economy's condition, and monetary policies of major central banks. If energy prices continue to rise significantly, leading to broader inflation pressure and substantially increased medium-term inflation expectations, the MPC may consider raising the policy interest rate to maintain price stability, especially if the baht depreciates, exacerbating inflation pressure or impacting financial market stability. Conversely, if energy prices stabilize, inflation remains low...
and the Thai economy recovers slowly, the MPC is likely to keep the policy interest rate low to support economic recovery.
